Manny Pacquiao’s wife has said that she initially did not want her husband to fight Oscar de la Hoya because the Mexican-American obviously has the height advantage.
“De la Hoya is much bigger than him and I told him [if it] is possible for [him] to fight someone else first and not de la Hoya [at] this time,” Jinkee Pacquiao told sports analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz.
Jinkee, however, said that Pacquiao already made the decision and she had no choice but to support him. Besides, she said Pacquiao is confident of his chances.
Boxrec.com lists de la Hoya at 5′ 10 1/2″ while Pacquiao stands four inches lower.
Last weekend, Pacquiao reiterated that he remains confident against de la Hoya.
“Ako, kaya laging malakas ang loob ko, laging positive ang iniisip ko lagi, na lagi akong mananalo dahil nandiyan ang mga tao sa likod ko, na naninwala, lalong lalo na ‘yung mga fans ko na laging sumusuporta,” he said before leaving for the United States for his training.
Pacquiao added that he relishes being the underdog since this would help him strive more for the victory.
“Alam mo mas masarap lumaban nang dehado ka,” he said.

MANILA, Philippines—The biggest boxing match in years is finally set.
Barring last-minute hitches, Oscar De La Hoya, boxing’s box office superstar in the past decade, will take on Manny Pacquiao, boxing’s hottest commodity today, in what promises to be a $100-million welterweight bout on Dec. 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
This was confirmed to the Philippine Daily Inquirer Thursday by Franklin “Jeng” Gacal Jr., Pacquiao’s legal counsel, who said in General Santos City that “both parties agreed (to the fight) and were satisfied.”
In a statement e-mailed by Gacal to the Inquirer, Pacquiao said he had agreed “in principle” to the December match, promised a fiery fight, and vowed to give the nation another moment of boxing glory.
“I have agreed in principle to accept the Dec. 6 fight against Oscar De La Hoya. This will be the toughest test in my boxing career because of the reach and height advantage of my esteemed opponent, aside from his great boxing skills,” Pacquiao said.
“This fight, however, will not be a walk in the park for Oscar De La Hoya. The boxing fans will see the same fire and intensity they have witnessed in my previous fights.”
Pacquiao, currently the World Boxing Council’s lightweight king, brimmed with confidence.
“I will frustrate the desire of Oscar De La Hoya to avenge the defeats of the great Mexican boxers who lost to me,” the Filipino ring idol said. “I am dedicating this forthcoming fight to my countrymen and all the boxing fans all over the world.”
“Don’t worry,” Pacquiao said with a laugh over the phone when asked what he thought of his opponent, an American of Mexican descent, who is also known as boxing’s “Golden Boy.”
At 5-foot-10 inches, De La Hoya stands four inches taller than Pacquiao and has a 6-inch reach advantage over the Filipino.
But at 29, Pacquiao is six years younger.
Farewell fight
It will be De La Hoya’s farewell fight and Pacquiao’s biggest ever.
Gacal refused to divulge the details of his talk Thursday night with Top Rank promotions boss Bob Arum.
“It was no less than Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions who called me up last night and confirmed the Dec. 6 Pacquiao-De La Hoya fight,” Gacal said.
According to Gacal, both parties will still meet to further discuss the details of the contract and possibly the final signing.
Although the announcement of the fight will still have to be officially made by De La Hoya in Los Angeles on Thursday (Friday in Manila), The Associated Press (AP) said the deal was “nearly wrapped up.”
The AP, in its report from San Francisco, California, quoted two people with knowledge of the negotiations as its sources. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal still has to be officially announced.

Oscar De La Hoya
Nicknamed “The Golden Boy” — is an American boxer and promoter who won a gold medal at the Barcelona Olympic Games. De La Hoya comes from a boxing family. His grandfather Vicente, father Joel Sr., and brother Joel Jr. were all boxers, but it was Oscar who took his boxing talent to superstar status. De La Hoya became Ring Magazine’s “Fighter of the Year” in 1995 and Ring Magazine’s top-rated Pound for Pound fighter in the world in 1997. De La Hoya has defeated seventeen world champions and has won ten world titles in six different weight classes.[2][3] He has also generated more money than any other boxer in the history of the sport.[4] De La Hoya’s amateur career included 223 wins, 163 by way of knockout, with only 5 losses. He won the United States’ only boxing gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics, by knocking down his opponent; a win which he dedicated to his deceased mother.[5] De La Hoya is also the founder of Golden Boy Promotions, a combat sport promotional firm. He is the first American of Hispanic descent to own a national boxing promotional firm and one of only a handful of boxers in history who have taken on promotional responsibilities while still active.
Manny Pacquiao
Manny Pacquiao or Pac-Man, is a Filipino professional boxer. He is currently the WBC Lightweight Champion and the WBC Super Featherweight Champion, and was the former Ring Magazine’s featherweight champion, world champion at IBF Super Bantamweight, and WBC Flyweight divisions. Manny is the first Filipino and Asian boxer to win four world titles in different weight divisions. He took over as the Ring Magazine pound for pound number 1 ranked boxer in the world on June 9, 2008 after Floyd Mayweather, Jr. announced his retirement from boxing.
Watch for the fight on December 6, 2008 in Las Vegas Nevada.
